Vegan Is Love

I'm not a vegan.  I WISH I could be, but I'm just not committed enough to make the jump.  That said, I found a great book on being a vegan.  It's simply put, explained in such a way that it makes me feel like I SHOULD be a vegan.  It's called Vegan is Love: Having Heart and Taking Action by Ruby Roth.  I found it at the NCPL (of course!)  when I was looking for some religion books for Ellie.  (She's asking tons of questions about God so I thought I'd see what I could find in the way of children's books.)  I was really pleased with the simple messages this book conveyed.  It didn't tell you what you should do, is just states what vegans believe and how they act.  It addresses issues dealing with
much more than cruelty to animals, from global hunger to pollution.  I read it to Vince and Caden popped down from the top bunk to listen as well.  Both boys had good questions about what we were reading and I felt good about introducing this topic to my kids in this way.  It's worth a read, wether your vegan or not!

From Amazon:

In Vegan Is Love, author-illustrator Ruby Roth introduces young readers to veganism as a lifestyle of compassion and action. Broadening the scope of her popular first book That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals, Roth illustrates how our daily choices ripple out locally and globally, conveying what we can do to protect animals, the environment, and people across the world. Roth explores the many opportunities we have to make ethical decisions: refusing products tested on or made from animals; avoiding sea parks, circuses, animal races, and zoos; choosing to buy organic food; and more. Roth’s message is direct but sensitive, bringing into sharp focus what it means to “put our love into action.” Featuring empowering back-of-the-book resources on action children can take themselves, this is the next step for adults and kids alike to create a more sustainable and compassionate world.

  1. Did you find any good religious books?

  2. None at all! We got one that described the Father, Son and Holy Ghost as an apple (peel, flesh and core). It was a really vague comparison and I told the kids that I didn't get it when we were done reading. "It's just a book about apples, Mom!" Clearly Vince didn't get the comparison either! I did find a good beginning reading at the Christian bookstore for Ellie. It's just some bible stories but she can read it herself.
