about my choice to use cloth. And they're cute. Did I mention that? I've done lots of blog posts before about cloth -- what brands and styles I have, how I wash them, how I do wipes and the diaper pail situation and even the detergent that I use. I've said before that I have two different styles of hybrid diapers, gdiapers and GroVia hybrid. Up to this point, I've never really used them as a hybrid. I actually really like both brands, but this particular post is going to focus on the gdiapers.
So, gdiapers. They're easier to find than many of the other brands I have. You can get them at Babies R Us and order them online from various retailers. I've never seen them, but I heard Target sells them. They're a less expensive option than some of my other brands and styles, but they really have some great things about them. For example, they're slimmer than many of the other brands. The number one complaint I hear from people about cloth is how bulky they are. I agree, but am willing to accept it. If I want a slimmer look, I just the gdiapers. I like the way they velcro in the back, especially now that I have a baby that rolls when I'm changing her. It's possible to diaper a baby backwards with these and as odd as that might sound, it's actually really convenient when I'm just trying to get the %$#@ diaper on her as she crawls away from me. It's also nice because she doesn't pull at them and take them off herself, like she does with the front tabs. They don't catch and when she sits they don't fold over, creating a permanent crease in the middle of the velcro in the tab. The negatives are that they're not as absorbent as some of the other brands, but that's what I feel is the price I pay for less bulk. The snap-in liner leaves marks on her sometimes, just where the snap is, but I think that's partly my fault for not adjusting it correctly. (See previous comment about diapering a baby mid-crawl.)
Up until this week, I've only ever used the cloth inserts with my gpants. I was at Babies R Us shopping for Olivia's birthday gifts and I thought I'd pick up a pack of disposable inserts and give them a try. To be honest, I did it for you, reader. I've never really thought too much of the whole hybrid thing, as I said, I'm very happy with cloth, but I thought a review of the hybrid in hybrid mode would be good. You're welcome. So here it is. I like the cloth better. The gdiaper disposable inserts are actually really cool as far as inserts go. They're compostable in your garden (wet ones only) and they're flushable too (they decompose like toilet paper). So I think if your'e looking for a hybrid, this is a great way to go. I did not compost them, but I did flush them. You have to rip down both sides and across the top to release the inner core. You're supposed to swish it all in the toilet to break it up, but I just sprayed it full stream with my diaper sprayer and that worked well. It's a lot to flush at once and Evan was sure it was clogging the toilet, but I'm standing by my opinion that it goes down pretty well. My biggest complaint is that the sizing is weird. The disposable inserts come in s and m/l/xl. Olivia has medium gpants so I got the bigger size inserts--they're HUGE! You really have to bunch them up in there to make them fit. I actually found the disposables to be bulkier than the cloth! I also thought they're were kind of expensive. They sell for about $15 for 32 which is comparable to what I pay for "natural" diapers from Earth's Best or Seventh Generation or The Honest Company. That's kind of what I really love about cloth though, once you buy the diapers, you're done. The lack of monthly diaper expenses are one of the biggest pluses for me. With this, you have to buy the diaper, the snap-in liner and the inserts. It seems like the worst of both cloth and disposable. I guess it might be good for travel, but I still think I'm just going to get a pack of disposables for our beach trip next month.
In a nutshell: I like the concept, if you're looking for hybrids then I really think this is a good choice. I think the compost/flushable option is FANTASTIC but I'm going to stick with the cloth. (Did I mention that the cloth inserts are one of the softest I have?) I'm glad I tried it. I might even have to order a few more of the gpants as Olivia starts walking and moving around more and figures out how to take off the velcro closures of some of the other diapers. But that's really just an excuse. I was just on the website to check prices and link it to here and saw some of the cute new colors and prints!
